Get set to pay for parking in the Palmerston CBD
Paying for parking in council owned carparks will begin in the Palmerston City Centre from next month.
The decision was resolved at this week's ordinary Council meeting. The hours of paid parking operation will be Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm (excluding statutory NT public holidays).
City of Palmerston Mayor Ian Abbott said the introduction of a user pay system of car parking in the City Centre will better manage parking demand and provide the much-needed revenue to expand and enhance the parking network in the City.
“As Palmerston’s City Centre continues to develop, it will generate an increased demand for car parking, whilst reducing the on-ground area available for car parking,” he said.
“We already face a legacy of car parking shortfalls in the City Centre created by past decisions to approve developments with insufficient or no on-site car parking” he said.
“The introduction of a user pays system will improve access to businesses and regulate parking in the area. It also means that funding for additional car parking, including a future multi-deck car park, comes from the users of car parking and not general rate revenue,” he said.
