Divorce rates increase in January
Online searches for 'divorce' rise dramatically during the time following on from Christmas, say the experts. Estate agents, lawyers, and counsellors all say that throughout January is one of the busiest times of the year.
Warring couples tend to try and stick it out through Christmas for the sake of their children and families, but is that actually the best thing to do - staying together for the kids?
One expert, a psychotherapist, says that divorce is often not the end of the quarrelling for couples, just the beginning of a new kind of war. Whereas once the arguing and fighting had been somewhat contained between the couple, after a divorce, the children are much more likely to be swept up in the middle once the floodgates have opened. All conflict then goes through them to each parent, back and forth.
Another expert, a family law consultant, doesn't believe it's necessarily the conflict that's damaging to the children, but what you do with it, saying that kids should be taught about conflict and how to deal with it healthily.
Whatever the outcome, they both point to the fact that your children should come first and foremost during such an unhappy time. Whilst it may be hard as a parent going through a divorce, it is your kids that need the both of you during this time.
