Communities from the Queensland/Northern Territory border to Burketown are on alert, with warnings a low in the Gulf of Carpentaria could develop into a cyclone.

The weather bureau says the system, which is currently about 7 kilometres north, northeast of Mornington Island, could bring gusts in excess of 125km/h near the Queensland, Northern Territory border tomorrow.

It's also expected to deliver heavy rain, with communities advised to be on alert and prepare for wild weather.
