Mum, kids badly hurt in NT boat crash

careflight finniss river boat tragedy

A mother who huddled over her two young children to protect them during serious boat crash on a remote Northern Territory river has been critically injured.

The young family was reportedly enjoying a Mother's Day fishing trip near the Finniss River, southwest of Darwin, when a speedboat collided with their tinny on Sunday morning.

The woman suffered critical head, chest and pelvis injuries, while her three- month-old baby daughter and four-year-old son were also seriously hurt.

CareFlight says the initial medical assessment suggests the mother "huddled over her children in an attempt to protect them and took the full impact of the collision".

The trio were flown to Royal Darwin Hospital, where the mother remains in a critical condition, it said in a statement.
