Proposal to light up Gardens Oval
The picturesque Gardens Oval near the city could soon be hosting night games of NTFL and cricket, if a proposal to install lights at the sporting ground gets the go-ahead.
The AFLNT and NT Cricket are conducting a community consultation period on behalf of Darwin City Council to see if people would like lights installed at Gardens Oval.
AFLNT CEO Michael Solomon said in a press release on Tuesday:
“Darwin is crying out for a new night sporting venue and Gardens Oval is the smart choice because it’s so central and iconic,” he said.
“The women’s and junior competition is growing at a rate that we can’t sustain because we don’t have enough room for our teams to practice and play.”
“Gardens Oval should be central to our sporting landscape but unfortunately it remains underutilised due to the absence of lights.” Said Mr Solomon.
The proposal includes a four-pole lighting scheme complete with glare shields to reduce any light spill in surrounding areas.
The consultation runs until July 28 and a community event will be held at Gardens Oval on July 26 from 5:00 - 6:30pm.
