Do you think the NT should open a space centre?
Leader of the Opposition Gary Higgins says the NT should open a space centre. He says it is a real opportunity to diversify the economy, create thousands of jobs and make the NT the technology capital of Australia.
The Opposition Leader issued this statement earlier today:
The review into the feasibility of an Australian space industry, announced by Science Minister Arthur Sinodinos, presents a unique and unprecedented opportunity for the Territory Government to make a real bid to transform the Territory into Australia’s space hub.
‘The knock-on benefits of an Australian space program based in the Territory have the potential to transform the Territory. There would be huge incentive for space-related industries to locate themselves close to the launch site and technological advances resulting from the program would attract further technological investment to the Territory. This is not to mention the incredible draw that a Territory-based space program would have on both domestic and international tourism.’
‘The Labor Government should immediately seize on this extraordinary opportunity to make the case for the location of a space industry in the Territory. This should include participating in the feasibility review being undertaken by CISRO, forming a Territory advisory committee to come up with a comprehensive proposal and engaging private business and other interested parties to explore the possibilities associated with this exciting opportunity.’
What do you think? Should the Northern Territory open a space centre?
