A group of people have allegedly thrown rocks at police in a remote Northern Territory community.

Officers were searching a plane at an airstrip in the East Arnhem Region yesterday when about 60 people turned up.

It is alleged a number of people began throwing rocks at police, injuiring one officer who was taken to the local clinic for treatment.

About three ounces of cannabis was found on the plane, with five passengers issued drug infringements.

Commander Janelle Tonkin condemned the behaviour.

“The fact that this incident was over such a small amount of cannabis is outrageous," Commander Tonkin says.

“The trafficking of illicit substances into vulnerable communities causes significant and long lasting harm, there is no excuse for it and you will be prosecuted. ”

“Assaults upon our officers are completely unacceptable and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.”
