The Northern Territory politician who oversaw "a system of disarray and despair" in youth prisons will face the juvenile justice royal commission on Friday.

Former Labor government corrections minister Gerry McCarthy is slated to take the stand at the final day of the inquiry's Alice Springs hearing.

It was during Mr McCarthy's tenure in the previous Labor government that much of the alleged abuse at Don Dale and Alice Springs youth detention centres took place.

Between 2009 and 2012 children were allegedly sexually harassed, physically assaulted, spithooded and subjected to solitary confinement.

Mr McCarthy is the current Gunner government housing minister.

Counsel assisting the commission Tony McAvoy SC said more of those responsible for the juvenile justice system will give evidence in the coming two weeks of hearings in Darwin.
