Tiwi Islands, Darwin brace as cyclone brews

IDR633

Darwin and nearby islands are bracing for the onset of a tropical cyclone expected to brew off the coast of the Northern Territory.

Remote communities on the Tiwi Islands have been warned to finalise preparations for a cyclone predicted to hit the area this morning.

Dangerous flooding, damaging waves and gales with gusts of up to 110 kilometres an hour are expected in the Tiwi Islands as the cyclone, to be named Tropical Cyclone Frances, strengthens into category two intensity.

It comes less than two weeks after Cyclone Debbie smashed into Queensland and New South Wales.
