Don Dale escapee caught at Darwin hospital

An inmate from a notorious Northern Territory juvenile jail momentarily escaped guards while at a Darwin hospital.

Territory Families says a young person held on remand at Don Dale Youth Detention Centre escaped a youth justice officer escort when departing the Royal Darwin Hospital just after 2pm on Monday.

NT Police were immediately notified and the young person was brought back into custody within 20 minutes.

The young person was being placed in a vehicle following a routine visit when they kicked one of the guards to the ground, jumped over the vehicle, and ran away.

For safety reasons, young people are not handcuffed whilst being transported in case of an accident.

The guards were unharmed.
