The 90-year-old actor has announced that The Great Escaper will be his final film.

The highly regarded actor had previously said that the idea of retirement was tempting but could never bring himself to officially do it, until now.

When speaking to the BBC’s Today show he said “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now”.

“I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews… What am I going to do that will beat this?”

The 90-year-old still has plenty of humour left in him when he joked that “the only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85”.

“They’re not going to be the lead. You don’t have leading men at 90, you’re going to have young handsome boys and girls. So I thought, ‘I might as well leave with all this.”

Over his career he has won 2 oscars in 1987 and 2000 for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Hannah and Her Sisters as well as The Cider House Rules however, he is probably most well known for his role as Alfred in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
