Efforts underway to boost prison capacity with new bail laws set to see more youths and adults on remand

NT Corrections Commissioner Matthew Varley says he is working with the Department of Infrastructure to expand prison capacity, with more youths and adults set to be on remand when new bail laws take effect.

He told Katie Woolf Corrections will do whatever it has to in order to house offenders, be it mattresses on the floor or working with police to manage watch house capacity.

Commissioner Varley says about 1,600 people are currently on bail with various conditions and around 700 have electronic monitoring for bail and parole, which includes about 40 youth.
