A workplace safety alert has been issued after a worker was seriously injured by a falling excavator bucket at a construction site in Darwin.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon (January 14) on Harry Chan Avenue with the worker taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

In 2019 a 30-year-old worker was killed in a similar incident which resulted in a $1.14-million fine.

NT Worksafe is calling for more safety measures to prevent further incidents.

Northern Territory Work Health and Safety Regulator Grant Hastie says he’s disappointed that some in the industry were still not taking workplace safety seriously.

“Transporting smaller excavator buckets in the main bucket unsecured is dangerous. And it is disappointing to hear some people in industry are calling this standard industry practice.”

“I suggest industry reconsiders this standard industry practice before another serious incident occurs,” Mr Hastie says.
