An Extra Public Holiday Might be on the Cards for Many Australians!

Both this year and next year Anzac Day falls on a weekend, which for many states means that Australians won’t be experiencing a late April public holiday in 2026. With only a few states reocginising the date as a public holiday regardless and moving the day off to the Monday the 27th, these states are the ACT and WA.

However, it looks like that another major state is eyeing the idea of recognising the day and moving the public holiday day off to the Monday the 27th of April. NSW Premier Chris Minns has revealed that discussions regarding creating a new public holiday to make up for the fact that for the next two years Anzac Day falls on a weekend.

“It’s not just this year, it’s next year as well that you don’t get the day off… and we (NSW) are underserved when it comes to public holidays, there’s a lot more in every other state… We’re going to have a conversation about it for this year… I’m not committing to that today because I think that this is a decision that we’ve got to make with the RSL in particular… We’ve got a lot of veterans … I think most people have got a lot of reverence for Anzac Day, they respect it. They recognise that it’s a time – it really is our national day – when we respect people who’ve died for the country.” – Premier Chris Minns
