Strike Action called off

The United Workers Union has called off strike action planned for tomorrow following a death in custody on Friday.

The UWU said in a statement” this decision has been made out of deep respect for the family of the deceased, as well as for the wellbeing of other prisoners and Officers who have been traumatised
by the incident. Officers acknowledge the profound impact that a suicide in custody
has on everyone within the correctional environment, and believe that proceeding with
industrial action at this time would place additional strain on an already distressed
community.”

It comes after the Corrections Commissioner applied to the Fair Work Commission to stop the strike over concerns of safe staffing levels if union members walked off the job.
