New Radicals ends 28-year music hiatus with new track ‘One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)’

New Radicals duo Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois, best known for their 1998 hit “You Get What You Give,” have officially ended nearly three decades of silence with their first original song since the late ’90s.

“One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)” is the band’s brand-new single, serving as the theme track for the new romantic comedy One Night Only. The piano-driven pop-rock number carries the same energy that made their debut so memorable, complete with lyrical hooks fans would expect.

The rockers released their debut (and only) album, ‘Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too’, in 1998. A year later, in 1999, frontman Gregg Alexander pulled the plug on the group, to focus on production work citing burnout from the touring and promo hustle.

Alexander went on to become a highly successful behind-the-scenes songwriter; co-writing Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor,” Santana and Michelle Branch’s “The Game of Love,” and the Oscar-nominated “Lost Stars”

The band briefly reunited in 2021 to perform at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. They came together again in 2024 for their own take on “Murder on the Dancefloor,” and earlier this year popped up alongside Michelle Branch on a re-recorded “The Game of Love.”
This new track, though, is a freshly written original co-penned by Alexander, Danielle Brisebois, and Nick Lashley.

One Night Only, directed by Will Gluck, stars Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner as two strangers who cross paths on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legally allowed in a version of New York. The supporting cast includes Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, Molly Ringwald, and Nicholas Braun.
From the description of “One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)” by NEW RADICALS from ONE NIGHT ONLY” on YouTube:

“What if one messy night turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to you?

This summer, Will Gluck, the filmmaker of ‘Anyone but You’ and ‘Easy A’, celebrates modern romantic comedy on the big screen with a fresh, witty, swoony original film about searching for love on the least romantic night of the year.”
The soundtrack for One Night Only dropped late July.

Tickets for One Night Only are on sale now.

Fans have responded enthusiastically to the new track and hope to even get a new album from the group, with comments such as:

“I miss this sound”

“Great comeback, thanks for this, Gregg. We need it.”

and: “They had one album. But it was lyrically genius and a solid no skips album. If they could maintain the same level of brilliance, I’d gladly welcome another”
