Darwin will get a new privately operated men’s prison facility with 1200 beds alongside a new women’s facility adjacent to the Darwin Correctional Precinct.

Both facilities will be built on approximately 75ha of Crown Land across from the Darwin Correctional Precinct.

The new facilities include a 1200-bed men’s remand and intake centre and a 200-bed women’s facility which the government expects to relieve the heavy strain on the Territory’s corrections system.

The men’s facility will be a public-private partnership model.
