The Corrections Commissioner has argued the new facilities are important to support the system

NT Corrections Commissioner Matthew Varley has insisted the two new correctional facilties are important to improve and support the Territory’s correctional system, especially with 45% of people in the corrections are on remand.

Commissioner Varley has shot down claims privatising operations at the proposed remand and intake system will lead to understaffing and cuts to rehabilitation programs.

The Acting Opposition Leader Ed Smelt says Labor is extremely concerned about the proposed project, questioning if the millions in dollars, upwards of a billion, would be better spent on other areas in the NT.

Meanwhile the construction industry has welcomed the proposed facilities – excited it will provide a huge boost in jobs and works for the sector.
