Acting Chief commits to prioritise chaplaincy services in NT prisons which were wound back due to staff shortages and overcrowding

Acting Chief Minister Gerard Maley says prisoners have had a lack of access to chaplaincy services since November due to staff shortages and overcrowding, committing to reinstate them after concerns were raised by Darwin’s Catholic Bishop Charles Gauci.
Mr Maley told Katie Woolf there are about 40 corrections prisoners currently being housed at Darwin watch house, with efforts underway to continually expand capacity at Berrimah jail as well staffing levels, with 31 corrections officers graduating last week.
The Acting Chief also took aim at the Prime Minister for leaving Territorians in limbo around Labor’s plans for the Darwin Port.
