Alcohol floor price to be scrapped, CLP claims it’s not working and punishes responsible drinkers
Attorney General and Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby says the government is delivering on an election promise, scrapping the alcohol floor price during parliament sittings this week, saying it’s not reducing alcohol-related harm or consumption.
She told Katie Woolf the soft silver pillows have been replaced with smashed glass bottles across the community because the floor price has pushed people onto hard spirits.
Despite calls from alcohol groups and recommendations around access to grog from the NT Coroner, Ms Boothby says the floor price isn’t working, adding all Territorians should not be punished for the actions of a few.
The Minister says the government is focusing on those doing the wrong thing, giving police more powers to deal with nuisance drinkers, with plans also in the works for alcohol rehabilitation.
