Breaching a DVO soon to carry jail term if harm is involved with victim’s levy also being increased

Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby says anyone who breaches a domestic violence order that involves harm or threats to cause harm will serve time in prison under amendments to domestic violence and victims’ legislation.
She told Katie Woolf the term of imprisonment will vary from two to five years, putting the rights of victims above offenders.
Ms Boothby says she has met with women’s legal services about the reforms, which also include greater notifications and information sharing with victims and increasing the victim’s levy by 41 per cent.
The AG says the bill has been referred to the parliamentary scrutiny committee and is expected to be passed in May.
