Chief Minister commits to top up NT Police budget with Treasurer’s advance if needed

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles says if the NT Police Force exceeds their budget this year she will top it up with a Treasurer’s advance if needed.

It follows revelations in budget estimates that former Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker’s payout came out of the police operational budget.

Ms Fyles told Katie Woolf she knows the payout amount but cannot disclose the figure or who paid for their legal fees.

On a separate matter, the Chief says the government acted urgently to introduce a presumption against bail for weapon offences in the wake of Declan Laverty’s death and is working to develop a knife crime strategy.
