Chief Minister defends reforms scrapping youth diversion for 13 serious offences and commits to examine findings of Kumanjayi Walker inquest

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says reforms that will allow police to charge youth for 13 additional offences instead of sending them to diversion are in response to feedback from NT police.
She told Katie Woolf the changes will put a stop to police being a taxi service and returning youth offenders to responsible adults, which is happening all too often.
Ms Finocchiaro says while everyone is looking forward to the Coronial inquest into the circumstances surrounding Kumanjayi Walker’s death being finalised, she is questioning how much of the findings will still be relevant, citing drastic changes within the NT Police Force since the fatal shooting in 2019.
