Chief Minister defends the latest crime statistics and breaks down new school attendance data

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro has defended the latest NT crime stats, saying the new police system has now been in place for two years and Territorians can be confident in the numbers, which show there were 1,200 fewer victims in the last 8 months compared to last year.

Asked about the DPP’s decision to not appeal the sentence handed to a youth over a violent home invasion that left a baby with a fractured skull in Alice Springs, the Chief said the government is reviewing sentencing to ensure the laws meet community expectations.

Ms Finocchiaro also told Katie Woolf under the former government there were 1,000 school students on the intensive support role which Labor didn’t want to include in school attendance data, with the CLP moving 328 kids off that list, deeming it significant progress.
