Chief Minister provides details on CLP’s urgent bail reforms and outlines implications of axing ‘detention as a last resort’ in bail applications

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says bail reforms being debated in NT parliament today go further than other states, with the CLP introducing two new tests for the consideration of community safety in bail applications for youth and adult offenders.

She told Katie Woolf Corrections and Police are reviewing everyone who is currently on bail but they won’t come under today’s bail changes unless they breach their conditions.

Ms Finocchiaro says the government is expecting an increase of more than 30 per cent in the youth incarceration rate following the changes, adding there is still capacity at the new youth detention centre.
