Chief Minister responds to the alleged rape of a child and death of a woman in Alice Springs

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says 2025 is a year of action, certainty and security, with a jam-packed parliament agenda for the first week of sittings including the introduction of the Territory Coordinator bill and removal of the debt ceiling and third-party merits review from the Petroleum, Water and Planning Act.

She told Katie Woolf the death of a woman in Alice Springs is “horrific” with the NT Government set to spend $36 million on prevention of domestic violence this year.

The Chief says she was made aware that a young child was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 19-year-old relative in a remote community within 24 and defended the time it took police to release information to the media so as not to jeopardise investigations.

Asked about the plans to utilise private contractors in NT prisons, Ms Finocchiaro says corrections officers spend 168,000 hours year on transporting prisoners to court, watch houses and hospital, contributing to $11 million in overtime, which could be done by specialist contractors.
