Chief Minister says NT prisoners are housed based on gender at birth after calls for male offenders to be removed from women’s prisons

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says it’s normal practice for a Chief Minister to appoint a Police Commissioner, deeming Martin Dole the best person for the job as a born and bred Territorian, with 29 years of experience in the force, who has also delivered the OC spray trial, a major pay deal and PPSO roll out in the time he has been acting in the role.
Asked about misuse of the government white car service, the Chief told Katie Woolf Selena Uibo and Jo Hersey have paid back the cost of their personal trips, adding that she isn’t prepared to release internal documents outlining the guidelines for using the VIP service.
In response to calls by the Women’s Forum Australia for all male offenders to be removed from women’s prisons in every state and territory, Ms Finocchiaro said in the NT prisoners are housed in the relevant jail facilities based on the gender that they were born.
