Chief Minister says she’s furious and will find out why youth was granted bail to attend funeral costing taxpayers $7k and then absconded

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says she will get to the bottom of how a youth, in custody over a home invasion that left a baby with a fractured skull in Alice Springs, was granted bail to attend a relative’s funeral and why the NT Government paid more than $7,000 for the chartered flight and then absconded.

She told Katie Woolf the Attorney General will meet with the Chief Justice and her government will consider further strengthening laws to meet public expectations.

In regards Healthscope’s decision to cease maternity services at Darwin Private Hospital, Ms Finocchiaro says a dedicated nurse and midwife are supporting 114 women to transition to RDH, adding that NT Health will also take on a lot of the staff impacted by the closure.

The Chief also says Corrections Commissioner Matthew Varley has her full support after a resounding vote of no confidence in his leadership, adding that workforce changes that will see private contractors and trained officers deployed in NT prisons are vital to ease pressure on the system.
