Paws Darwin Community Vet Sarah Vanderstelt is heartbroken over the loss of a pet dog that she performed a three-hour surgery on.

The pooch was rushed to the clinic last week with a wound believed to be from a machete.

Ms Vanderstelt told Katie Woolf Bear was a fighter and would have made it if it weren’t for a parasite.
