Corrections Commissioner explains plans to expand prison capacity and hand back watch houses

NT Corrections Commissioner Matthew Varley says 2,328 people are currently in NT prisons, with 157 in police watch houses, putting operational pressure on staff and systems.

He told Katie Woolf the CLP’s Corrections plan includes returning watch houses to police as soon as possible, building capacity over the next four years and delivering the new facilities that have been promised.

In response to concerns raised by a whistleblower, Commissioner Varley said an independent review is underway into whether intensive management plans were conducted for inmates involved in recent serious assaults on Correctional officers.
