Education Minister Jo Hersey flags changes to NT Childcare industry following death of Ebony Thompson

Education Minister, Jo Hersey, talks with Katie Woolf on 360 about charges being laid against a rural childcare centre and three of its supervisors over the tragic death of a 22-month-old girl.

The toddler, Ebony Thompson, died after becoming trapped on a fence at the Humpty Doo Community & Child Care Centre in August 2023 — and was unaccounted for up to ten minutes, when staff say supervision failed.

A coroner found the low loop-top fence was in a “blind spot” behind a shed, and ruled the death was preventable due to systemic supervision failures.

Education Minister Jo Hersey says the charges will send a strong message that childcare safety must come first.
