Full extent of pressures on NT police force revealed in budget estimates
Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro says police watch houses are still being used to house prisoners as NT jails remain full and there’s no clear timeframe about when that will change.
She told Katie Woolf budget estimates also revealed the tremendous demand on the NT’s Emergency call centre, with 199,000 calls expected this year, equating to 545 calls a day.
Ms Finocchiaro has taken aim at the government for its lack of immediate measures to alleviate the pressures on police.
The CLP has also committed to phase out commercial barramundi gillnetting if it wins government in August but is yet to release further detail on the plan.
