Independent MLA calls for national body to be established to oversee deaths in custody with powers to conduct independent investigations

Member for Johnston Justine Davis is calling for a national body to be established to oversee deaths in custody, facilitating independent investigations, to help address the overrepresentation of Aboriginal deaths in custody.

She told Katie Woolf coronial inquests don’t go far enough and although human rights organisations want more to be done, her motion in parliament was rejected by the CLP Government.

Asked about the Chief Minister’s stance on transgender prisoners in the NT, Ms Davis said women and their rights need to be protected as do those of transgender people, adding that some people have been harmed by the debate this week, deeming it an invitation for hate speech.
