Independent says locking kids up doesn’t work, touting restorative justice programs

Independent Member for Johnston Justine Davis says relocating youth offenders from Alice Springs to Darwin removes them from family and support, adding that building new prisons and filling them up isn’t the solution to crime.

She told Katie Woolf the root causes of crime need to be addressed, suggesting safe places for youth, on-country peacemaking and restorative justice programs.

In regards, to the funding crisis impacting Legal Aid Ms Davis says justice will not be served if the NT does not have a robust legal system that properly represents people and is concerned the community is at-risk.
