Indigenous advocate says OC spray increases the risk of violence, ignores concerns of experts and DV victims who fear it could be used on them

Indigenous justice advocate, Thomas Mayo says introducing more weapons like OC spray into the community increases the chance of violence and reduces safety and pointed to concerns raised by victims of DV about the spray being used on them.
Asked about the use of OC Spray in WA, he told Katie Woolf it is early days in WA and the same concerns were raised there, with no evidence it’s making the community safer, suggesting the NT Government should instead be focusing on addressing poverty, mental health issues and health problems.
Mr Mayo says the type of policies the CLP are implementing will only make things worse in the NT, adding that reducing access to weapons is a better approach.
