Minister defends proposed changes to NT child protection laws, saying welfare needs to be above cultural considerations

Minister for Child Protection Robyn Cahill has defended proposed changes to child protection laws in the NT saying the priority is the welfare of children, which needs to be put above cultural considerations.
The CLP Government is considering changing a clause in the Child Protection Act to make it easier for courts to put Indigenous children in non-Indigenous placements, sparking concerns from the NT and National Children’s Commissioners.
But Ms Cahill told Katie Woolf in some circumstances the safety of a child could be at risk due to cultural requirements under the current laws and if changes aren’t made the government could be accused of abandoning kids.
