NT jails under pressure, with 45 per cent of the prison population on remand

NT Corrections Commissioner Matthew Varley says the Darwin and Alice Springs jail are at maximum capacity, with 2,250 people in custody.

He told Katie Woolf 45 per cent of those in prison are on remand, with the Darwin City watch house providing 40 beds and Peter McAuley Centre offering 14 to help manage the overflow.

Commissioner Varley says a security review of G Block at Alice Springs jail has recommended a number of infrastructure improvements which the Department is working through with DIPL after recent riots.
