NT Treasurer reveals major cost blow outs on projects and directs all government agencies to save $20 million per year, with $12bn in net debt

Treasurer Bill Yan says the CLP inherited a $1.4 billion “blackhole” from the former government and has to continue to fund incomplete projects and agencies, thrusting the NT into $12 billion net debt.

He told Katie Woolf major cost blowouts on projects like the Tiger Brennan overpass, Mandorah jetty, Nightcliff police station and Darwin ship lift have contributed to the deteriorating fiscal position.

Mr Yan says every government agency has been directed to save $20 million per year, by cutting back on consultancy and travel.
