Security patrols in Darwin CBD hang in the balance as Lord Mayor pushes for police instead

Darwin’s Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis says the Council is yet to decide whether it will continue to contribute funds for CBD security to the NT Government, with its current funding ending this financial year.

Kon Vatskalis told Katie Woolf he would prefer to have police patrolling the streets, saying security guards have limited powers when it comes to public drinking and anti-social behaviour.

The Lord Mayor also stands by his push for extra police despite the Police Review finding that the NT needs an additional 200 officers to meet demand.
