Ten referrals to new circuit breaker program aiming to support at-risk youth and hold parents accountable

Minister for Children and Families Robyn Cahill says the government’s new circuit breaker program aims to support at-risk youth and hold parents accountable for the actions of their children.

She told Katie Woolf, kids on the streets at night or engaging in anti-social behaviour will be taken home or to a safe place to sleep with follow up the next day and a parental responsibility agreement developed.

Ms Cahill says teams of up to six staff will be rostered on 24/7 to also review school attendance, issues from home life and any medical or mental health concerns, with referrals where needed.

Asked about reports a 16- and 17-year-old boy allegedly behind a violent home invasion in Alice Springs had hundreds of previous charges, Ms Cahill says the justice system is broken.
