International Test Cricket is returning to the Top End for the first time in more than two decades.
The match in August will see Australia take on Bangladesh at Marrara Stadium, secured in a deal by the NT Government.
It comes after Darwin hosted two T20 International games last year against South Africa, which generated $4.25 million in economic activity.
Minister for Major Events Marie-Clare Boothby has welcomed the announcement as a win for the Northern Territory.
“Last year was a landmark year for sport and major events in the Territory. This year will knock it out of the ground, with international test cricket in August another in a long run of world-class events to come,” Minister Boothby says.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg says he was proud to bring international cricket to the Northern Territory over the next two years, a chance to showcase cricket as Australia’s national sport.
“Test cricket will return to Marrara Stadium meaning some of the world’s best players will help inspire the next generation of NT cricketers.”
