Stolen Rifle Handed in to Police After Katherine Youth Crime Spree

A gun and ammunition that was allegedly stolen during a spate of car thefts in Katherine on the weekend has been handed in to police.

A group of youths are accused of stealing two cars on Saturday evening, an Isuzu utility near the Katherine Hot Springs and a Toyota Landcruiser from a commercial car business on the north side, with police believing both thefts were committed by the same group.

One of the alleged stolen vehicles had contained an unsecured Ruger .300 rifle and ammunition in it at the time it was stolen.

The group of youths are further accused of driving the vehicles dangerously, actively targeting other drivers, while using the Landcruiser at attempting to ram police vehicles while the youths in it threw objects at officers.

Police successfully deployed tyre deflation devices on the Isuzu utility, and the youths fled the scene on foot, meanwhile police called off a a coordinated plan to safely stop the Landcruiser due to the dangerous manner of driving.

The Landcruiser was eventually spiked near the Katherine Bridge, and then abandoned at Acacia Drive.

Police say up to ten youth offenders fled from the vehicle into nearby bushland.

On Sunday night, the unsecured Ruger .300 rifle and ammunition was handed in to Katherine Police Station by members of the public.

Strike Force Cerberus is continuing to investigate a series of incidents, with the alleged youth offenders remaining at large.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact police on 131 444, quoting reference number NTP2600066917.

Police are also reminding all firearms licence holders to ensure their firearms and ammunition are stored safely and securely at all times in accordance with legislative requirements.
