I grew up in the 80s, a proud member of Generation X, back when our adventures didn’t come from a screen you could hold in your hand.
Before Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram were even ideas in someone’s head, we had The Goonies, a film that wasn’t just entertainment, it was a childhood rite of passage.
If you were a kid then, you’ll remember that magic: a mismatched gang of kids from the Goon Docks chasing pirate treasure, dodging booby traps, and outsmarting gangsters. We didn’t just watch The Goonies, we lived it in our backyards, on our BMX bikes, and in our imaginations.
That movie was freedom, friendship, and the thrill of believing anything was possible, all wrapped in a treasure map.

So when I hear talk of a Goonies sequel, I get a little excited… and a little nervous. Turns out, I’m not alone, Josh Brolin, who played the big brother Brand Walsh back in 1985, feels the same way. He’s admitted he has “trepidation” about the idea, worried that revisiting the story could “taint” the original magic. And I get it, some things are so perfectly tied to a time and place that you almost don’t want to touch them.
Brolin says he’d love for it to happen if it could capture the spirit of the original, something generations have embraced without it ever feeling dated. But he’s also quick to joke about the reality of the cast’s age now: “The Goonies grew up, came out with their walkers, and fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well,” he quipped.
Still, there’s hope. With Steven Spielberg reportedly on board as a producer for The Goonies 2, there’s a chance lightning could strike twice. Brolin’s take is simple: “If Spielberg approves it, you know it’s going to be good.”
And maybe that’s the real treasure here—if they can keep that wild, heart‑racing, slightly chaotic magic that made us all want to be a Goonie, then sure, I’m in.
But until then, I’ll hold onto the original, that perfect slice of 80s adventure that still makes me want to yell at the top of my lungs: Goonies never say die!
