Some Aussies are swapping painkillers for a drive-thru order, claiming a large Coke and fries from McDonald’s can ease migraine symptoms. The trend, dubbed the “McMigraine Meal,” has taken off on TikTok, with users insisting it works better than medication.

Dr Myro Figura says there is some logic behind it. A large Coke contains around 85 milligrams of caffeine, which is more than some migraine medications. Caffeine can help relieve certain types of headaches, particularly those linked to withdrawal or fatigue.

The salt in the fries can assist with hydration, similar to an electrolyte drink. Add in the quick hit of carbs, and it may also stabilise low blood sugar, another common migraine trigger.

Not a Cure-All

Headache specialist Dr David Walker agrees caffeine can help in the short term. However, he warns that fried food can be a trigger for some people. While this method might offer relief for mild cases, it is not a recommended solution for chronic migraines.

For occasional sufferers, a Macca’s run might take the edge off. Just don’t toss out your medication too quickly.
