Anti-social behaviour causes laneway closures

February 10, 2023 11:01 am in by

A number of laneways are being closed in Katherine East in a bid to stop crime and anti-social behaviour.

It comes after concerns were raised with the Council about laneways being used to escape from police and by vandals to throw rocks at homes and scope out yards for potential break-ins.

The Katherine Town Council is now in the process of closing off access to five thoroughfares which all link up to Maluka Drain.

It includes Fordham Court, Hudspeth Place, Frangipanni Court, Acacia Drive and Sandalwood Crescent.

Katherine Mayor Lis Clark says the approach will be trialled for six months.

“We have listened to residents who have been scared and intimidated in their own homes,” Cr Clark says.

“We will monitor this trial and see what its outcomes are.”

Gates will be installed to keep people out of the laneways.

If effective the closures could be made permanent and may be rolled out to other parts of the town.
