An Aussie drag car driver remains in hospital after crashing at high speed at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway.

Kelvin Lyle was competing in Saturday night’s Nitro Up North drag racing competition at Darwin’s V8 Supercars event when he failed to deploy the car’s safety parachute.

Mr Lyle did not slow down, hitting a barrier and crashing into the end of the track – where he narrowly avoided hitting his opponent.

NT Health has confirmed in a statement that the 55-year-old driver remains in a stable condition at Royal Darwin Hospital.

In a Facebook post, his partner Shaniah Edwards says they are not expecting serious damage from the injuries.

“He is stable and in an induced coma,” she says.

“The doctors are pretty confident that all injuries will heal with time and there isn’t likely any long-term damage done.”

A statement from the Australian Drag Racing Championship says they are thinking of Mr Lyle during this time.
