ICAC to review whistleblowing in the NT

January 18, 2023 11:23 am in by

Whistleblowing in the NT is set to be reviewed by the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption.

The review aims to introduce new directions and guidelines, updating those which were issued by the former Commissioner.

Commissioner Michael Riches says there should be adequate protections in place for people who come forward with information about impropriety in public administration.

“One of the main reasons people do not report wrongdoing is the fear of retaliation,” Mr Riches says.

“Every public body has a responsibility to minimise the risk of retaliation against those who come forward and call out impropriety.”

He says the review will help him better understand the ways disclosures are managed and the measures in place to reduce the risk of retaliation.

The Commissioner says he is keen to hear from whistleblowers and other stakeholders about their experiences.

“I invite submissions from persons who may have information relevant to this project,” Mr Riches says.

“I encourage anyone, and in particular Northern Territory public officers, to provide me with information about their agency’s approach to whistleblower disclosures and protections.”

“I also encourage public officers who have made disclosures to tell me about their experiences in doing so.”

Written submissions can be sent via email to whistleblower.project@icac.nt.gov.au and can be made anonymously.

Submissions close on March 31, 2023.
