Six people who died in a Pine Creek road crash are yet to be identified

A horror road crash in Pine Creek has claimed the lives of six people.

A Mitsubishi 4WD collided with a road train on the Stuart Highway on Friday at 4:15pm, with both vehicles catching on fire.

Northern Territory Police, Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service and St John Ambulance were deployed to the scene, and The Department of Infrastructure Planning and Logistics had closed the road in the area of the crash.

Investigators believe all six of the fatalities were travelling in the Mitsubishi 4WD, and investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.

Officer in Charge of the Forensic Science Branch Bruce Payne they are yet to identify the six people.

“Due to the severe nature of the crash, identification of the deceased is likely to be a long process as we work to bring some closure to the families involved, and to understand how the crash occurred.”

The Stuart Highway has since been re-opened and traffic has returned to normal.

NT Police are now appealing to the public for information – if anyone has dash-cam who was travelling in the area between 2:30pm and 4:45pm on Friday please contact police on 131 444.
