A standard cab ride has turned ugly in the Top End overnight.

According to police a taxi driver was dropping off passengers in the Ludmilla area at about 2:45am this morning when he was sprung upon by a teenage boy and held at knifepoint.

Northern Watch commander Sonia Kennon says the cabbie handed over his wallet with the teen allegedly fleeing the car.
