A teenager has been issued a Notice to Appear after allegedly speeding and crashing in Darwin’s rural area.

The 18-year-old unlicensed driver was travelling towards Marrakai with a passenger in the car and allegedly reaching speeds of 190km/hr early Monday morning.

He is accused of attempting to overtake a bus near the Adelaide River Bridge before losing control of the vehicle, crashing into the bus and rolling multiple times.

Police attended the scene, where the teenager returned a roadside alcohol result of 0.174 – more than 3 times the legal limit.

The driver and passenger did not suffer any serious injuries from the crash.

The driver has been issued a Notice to Appear for multiple offences including Drink Driving, Speeding and Drive Unlicensed.

NT Police Superintendent Daniel Shean says that the drivers actions are unacceptable, and is a timely reminder to be safe on Territory roads ahead of the Christmas period.

“This was an entirely preventable crash. Speed and Alcohol simply do not mix and we are urging Territory drivers to take the Fatal Five seriously.”

““It is absolutely incredible that no one was injured in this crash. We are coming into the Christmas period and the last thing our members want to be doing is explaining to family members why loved ones won’t be coming home.”
